Entering the territory of rom-coms, ‘One More Happy Ending’ might seem like another conventional tale, but what lies beneath the surface is a delightful surprise. In its clichés, this drama manages to craft an engaging narrative that could easily secure a place among the best in K-dramaland.
The premise initially appeared to echo familiar themes, but as the story unfolds, it blooms into something deeper and more relatable. The lives of four women take center stage, weaving a tale not just about love but also delving into the intricacies of life post ‘happily ever after.’
At its core, the drama tackles the universal pursuit of happiness amidst the complexities of relationships in one’s thirties. While its essence aligns with series like ‘Sex and the City’ or ‘Girls,’ it provides a fresh lens into the challenges of dating and standards in a materialistic world.
The narrative arcs of each woman echo common yet profound messages about relationships. The main storyline, often the focus of the drama, navigates through love triangles, shedding light on the struggle between love and friendship, displaying a nuanced view of valid and invalid relationships. Seo In Young’s character, albeit sidelined, was good, but the shadow cast by Yoo In Na’s character slightly eclipses her presence. Kwon Yool delivers a performance that’s appropriately cold and emotionless, fitting his character’s demeanor.
But it’s Jung Kyung Ho who emerges as the standout. In a narrative primarily focused on women, he crafts the most crucial, touching, funny, and endearing character, rising above and owning the show with impeccable acting prowess.
In recommendation, ‘One More Happy Ending’ might not appeal to everyone. Those familiar with shows like ‘Sex and the City’ or rom-com enthusiasts might find it charming, but it might not resonate universally. For me, someone generally averse to rom-coms, this series managed to captivate, leaving me pondering whether it was the show’s quality or a shift in my perspective.
